What is Lactase?
Lactase, also known as β-galactosidase, is an enzyme that hydrolyzes lactose—the sugar found in milk—into its digestible components, glucose and galactose. It is naturally produced in the human small intestine, but individuals with lactose intolerance lack sufficient levels of it. Commercial lactase is derived from microbial fermentation and is used in dietary supplements, infant formulas, and industrial processing of lactose-free milk and dairy products.

Advantages:

  • Enables lactose-intolerant individuals to consume dairy comfortably

  • Improves digestive comfort and nutrient absorption

  • Facilitates production of lactose-free dairy without altering taste

  • Stable and effective across a range of processing conditions

Applications:

  • Lactose-free milk, yogurt, and ice cream

  • Dietary enzyme capsules and chewables

  • Infant formula and elderly nutrition

  • Food industry dairy enzyme treatments

FAQs:

  • Is lactase safe for daily use? Yes, especially for managing lactose intolerance.

  • Is it vegan? Yes, when produced from microbial sources.

  • Does it affect dairy flavor? No, it maintains original dairy taste.

  • Can it be added during food prep? Yes, especially in home-based lactose-reduced recipes.
